Steven Cantrill

Steven has over 20 years’ tax experience in public sector and private practice specialising on international taxation and structuring.

Steven began his career in the ATO, leaving as a Director and specialising in International Tax and Double Tax Agreement interpretation. He has experience in a big 4 professional services environment, having spent four years in KPMG tax advisory, in Enterprise (High Net Wealth Individuals and SME market) and Corporate Tax (Large and Multinational Businesses).

He has worked for three years in ABA Legal Group (now Gild Legal) as an International Tax Specialist and admitted solicitor. Steven helps our clients with flexible, commercial and tax efficient structures in Australia and offshore.

Experience

  • Led the ATO audit team in the audit of Mitsui who structured an Australian E&R resources project, with unanimous Full Federal Court approval ($120m).
  • Advised Capilano Honey Ltd in relation to the successful takeover by a Hong Kong private equity firm ($190m).
  • Advised Goldwind (Chinese multinational) on the acquisition and structuring of the Cattle Hill Wind Farm ($300m).
  • Advised Edify Energy on the disposal of the Darlington Point Solar Farm to Octopus Investments. (A UK multinational) ($450m).
  • Prior to leaving the ATO, responsible for drafting ATO Taxation Ruling 2016/D3 on the interaction of Australia’s domestic source rules and tax treaties.
